7th Global Economic Summit to strengthen bilateral ties with India and Middle East

World Trade Centre Mumbai and All India Association of Industries today announced their annual flagship event - Global Economic Summit  (GES 2018) on ‘GLOBAL VALUE CHAINS (GVCs) : Accelerating MSME Growth, Development and Sustainability’. Supported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry & Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India and Foreign Trade Association,  GES 2018 will be held from February 22 to 24, 2018 at World Trade Centre, Mumbai. Mr. Suresh Prabhu, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of India has consented to address the Summit. More than 500 business delegates from India and overseas will participate in the Summit to explore potential partners in the value chain for their products and services and discuss challenges and policy remedies for integrating MSMEs in the GVCs. The sixth Kubuqi International Desert Forum was held from July 28 to July 30 in the Kubuqi Desert in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. Participating guests from other countries visited Kubuqi and witnessed the successful practices of Kubuqi’s desertification control. The forum offered them better understanding of the Kubuqi Model. They believe that the Kubuqi Model will play an important role in desertification control in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. International conferences held in China are becoming attractive platforms for sharing effective experiences in promoting global ecological development.

Effective Systematic Planning
The core pillars of the Kubuqi Model are government policy support, industrial investment, market-oriented participation of farmers and herdsmen and sustainable ecological improvement.

Mr. Pradeep Monga
Many countries along the Belt and Road Initiative suffered desertification, and that good design plays a key role in helping China create the Kubuqi Model, a unique path of desertification control, said Pradeep Monga, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. He also said that with joint efforts, the public sectors and private sectors have introduced an innovative mode for desertification control. It empowers the land with greater productivity. It contributes to a sustainable development and creates more employment opportunities." I'm very glad to witness the real achievements Kubuqi solution has secured." he said.

The Indonesian Economic and Industrial Committee Chairman Bachir gave Kubuqi a thumbs up for the practice of raising sheep under photovoltaic panels. He said he appreciated the imagination of local businesses in ecosystem design and said he would like to share Kubuqi’s comprehensive desertification control experiences for the benefit of the international community.

A Globally Popular Model
The Kubuqi Model has been praised by the UN Environment Programme for desertification control and being an “eco-pioneer” in greening the world thanks to its success in ecological restoration. The Kubuqi Model has become a name card for China’s desertification control efforts. In order to promote and share the experience of combating desertification, the Kubuqi International Desert Forum was established in 2007 and has been held five times thanks to the support of governments at all levels, relevant departments, the UNEP and the UNCCD secretariat. More than 2,000 political dignitaries, experts and ecological entrepreneurs from around the world have participated in field trips, professional exchanges and experience sharing via forums and benefited greatly from them.

The Kubuqi Model has become a popular topic in several meetings and dialogues of the sixth Kubuqi International Desert Forum. Participating foreign guests believed that the Kubuqi Model should be widely shared in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.

Prof. Atsushi Tsunekawa from Arid Land Research Centre, Tottori University in Japan, said it was urgent for countries along the Belt and Road Initiative to cooperate over ecological restoration. They need to conduct risk assessment for environmental and sustainable development, and the successful practices of the Kubuqi Model should be used as one reference, he said.

Elvis Paul Tangem, the coordinator from The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative, Africa Union Commission, said that it's always a dream of his to witness in person what Kubuqi has achieved in anti-desertificationwhich he had never seen before, which completely changed his perception.

"I'm very impressed, and motivated." said Arslanbek Omurzakov, Deputy director of Centre for Study of the Silk Road, Kyrgyzstan, “after hearing about Kubuqi's experience in anti-desertificationthe change is not only imposed on eco-system, but also on the whole society, which makes it sustainable. ”He wishes the technology could be introduced to more countries or enterprises.



Shafqat Kakakhel, Chairman of Sustainable Development Policy Institute, Islamabad Pakistan said: Kubuqi model is a miracle of modernisation and and this success hinges on the will of the Chinese government. He said that according to China's Kubuqi experience can draw the following conclusions: first it need a political commitment. Which is impetus from  top political leaders. Second, there is a proper policy. Thirdly, there should be appropriate political institutions. Moreover, it need to promote science and technology. Finally, the most important is participation from community and individuals in all aspects of society.

Kubuqi Brings Hope

Desert control is a worldwide problem, and the Kubuqi Desert is the first desert in the world to achieve large-scale successful control.

The success of Kubuqi Model relies mainly on increasing local people’s income in the greening efforts via the combination of ecology and industry, enterprise development and ecological management. These efforts will expand oases and happiness while reducing desert and poverty.

Prof. Victor Squire from the University of Adelaide, Australia, said  the Kubuqi International Desert Forum had prompted people in all areas to think about desertification, and that the Kubuqi Model has made it impossible to find just one solution to the challenge by showing that land users are both part of the problem and part of the solution. The Kubuqi Model also provides a way for transformation, which gives us hope.

British bio-carbon engineering company founder Lauren Fletcher said that Kubuqi’s achievements in desertification control was very impressive and the delegation from his company felt excited for participating in the forum. He also said that drones tree planting technologies need to be further developed so as to contribute to combating desertification.
These achievements point out the direction for desertification control and hope it will achieve greater success in the future to help the 2 billion hectares desertification worldwide.

A Chinese solution to ecological restoration
After the forum ended, experts believed the forum let participants see that Kubuqi’s concept of green development and experiences of sustainable development can offer fundamental solutions to help peaceful development of the desertification regions involving over 2 billion people globally. Many guests are looking forward to the 13th General Assembly of the Contracting Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which will be held in Ordos and might bring together more unique solutions and richer consensus. The ecological development in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative need both Chinese solutions as well as China being one sharing platform.

Disabled cyclist tackles the desert at the Wuhai International Cycling Conference

Wuhai city in Inner Mongolia is a land of immense beauty and contrasts – from the towering desert dunes, to the roiling waters of the Yellow River. But for one man, the call of the Ulan Buh Desert is the call of challenge.

Wang Yonghai lost his left leg in a car accident when he was 19 years old. One day, by pure change, he came across the national para-cycling team training near his home. Inspired by the encounter Wang started to train and compete in para-cycling events.


Wang Yonghai joined the China National Para-Cycling Team from 2001 to 2011 and participated in many cycling races at home and abroad, winning 6 gold medals and many honors. In the 7th National Paralympic Games, he took gold in the Five Kilometer Road Race. He also participated in the Columbia Century Paralympic Games LC3 Level Cycling Event and Ranked Third in this world class event.

After retiring from the team, Wang continues to challenge himself. He participated in the Tour of Qinghai Lake 2013, competed against all normal athletes, and completed the match in 13 days. His spirit touched the nation and was awarded the Disability Sportsmanship Award of 2013 CCTV Sports Personality of the Year. In 2016, he rode 2160 km, 18 days independently along the Sichuan-Tibet road to get to Potala Palace and became the first handicapped cyclist who has successfully conquered the tough inter-provincial passage.

But the desert is a special challenge that he will face during the Wuhai International Cycling Conference, starting on August 26. The event is authorized by the Audax Club Parisien (ACP) and organized by Randonneurs of China (ROCn) and includes a grueling 200-kilometer ride expected to take participants more than 13 hours.

Looking to buy a car for your mother?  We’ve listed five cars that would make for a perfect gift for your mom this Mother’s Day. To make matters convenient, they are all automatic cars and compact in size for her to be able to punt it around the city easily.
1.  Maruti Suzuki Ignis AMT
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is unique. Yes, it may look quirky to some because of its oddball exterior design, but it definitely grabs attention. The Brio hasn’t changed much since its launch, but that doesn’t make it look outdated. Like the Ignis, the Brio also comes equipped with a peppy 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder unit that makes 88PS of maximum power. The engine comes with a 5-speed torque converter which does the job well within the confines of the city. The Brio automatic will cost you Rs 6.82 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Yes, it does appear to be a bit on the higher side, especially for a car that hasn’t seen a lot of changes to its mechanicals and styling in the recent past. But we’re sure the Honda badge and the overall refinement levels make it a worthy purchase. It sits a little low, so it’s better to ask your mother to go for a spin in it before signing on the dotted line.

3.  Volkswagen Polo GT TSI
The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is a mean machine. It has a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that dishes out 105PS of maximum power. The engine is powerful and refined, but the 7-speed DSG transmission it comes with makes the package divine. This car is quite quick compared to the hatchbacks listed above, and we’d recommend you to pick it only if your mom loves fast cars and has a serious need for speed. The Polo GT TSI is priced around Rs 9.30 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It may appear costly, but we’re sure your mom will appreciate the overall fit and finish, the DSG gearbox, the power and refinement levels.
4.  Volvo V40
Ever since the Volvo V40 facelift donned the Thor’s Hammer headlamps, it’s become the new heartthrob of the luxury hatchback segment. Put everything aside and just focus on the way the V40 looks. Measuring 4,369mm in length, this car is not small by any standards (definitely longer than the Dzires and the Xcents). And it’s wide too, measuring 1,857mm in width and has got the road presence that your mother would want. If you were planning on upgrading your mother's ride and enter the luxury league, do go for a short ride in Volvo’s entry-level hatchback before making a purchase. It costs Rs 26.04 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
5.  MINI Cooper D
MINI is the first name that comes to mind when you talk about compact luxury hatchbacks. The entry-level 3-door Cooper D is compact, stylish, and has a 115PS diesel engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Cooper D, or any other MINI for that matter, makes a style statement of its own. This one gets only 2-doors (and a boot lid) but has a rear bench as well. There are numerous personalisation options as well to make it suit your taste. The Cooper D costs Rs 28.50 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
